Favorite and Easy Ways to Spice Up Your Home for Autumn

As mentioned in my last post, autumn is my favorite season. Autumn quickly crept up on me this year, but somehow I sensed that it was coming in early September. Now, that it is officially Autumn—as of a month ago—it is properly time to discuss fall decorations without impinging on the end of summer (not to mention that it’s now Halloween month!)
I do like to keep my decorations somewhat simple, mostly due to storage constraints. However, I do find that there are plenty of accents you can add for any season or holiday without having to worry about a massive amount of storage space for the off seasons. Here are three of my favorite recommendations:
Candles
Candles are simple and the small flickering flames lend a warm and relaxed vibe to the colder and cloudier days…and they fill your home with a cozy scent for the season. There are a plethora of scents that can suit various seasons: floral and citrus for spring and summer, pine and berry for winter, and spice and apple and pumpkin for fall. I highly recommend personally going to a store and sniffing each of the candles before purchasing, as sometimes the description and the scent don’t quite mesh with what you want. I had quite a difficult time finding a fall candle that didn’t smell like cheap chemicals. However, I did finally land on two candles from the brand Yankee Candle: Autumn Wreath and Spiced Pumpkin. These candles are my new obsession! I love having a little quiet time in the morning with my coffee or tea, a candle, and a good book!
Adding Warm Autumnal Color Accents
Mimic the changing leaves by adding hints of red, yellow, orange, and brown to your home. These colors can be within decorative pillow covers or throw blankets. I rotate throw blankets around a bit, adding a bit of color to a neutral duvet cover instead of having it on the sofa, or vice versa. I also swap our pillow cases: trading in some of the bright floral patterns and pink colors for darker browns and neutral colors. As we get into November, these covers will shift again toward a bit more of a winter holiday plaid.
Table linens also shift somewhat, moving away from lavender flowers into a glittery gold table runner (suitable for all fall and winter holidays! Again, a bit of gold to match the outside leaves and a bit of glitter for a holiday celebration. Top this with your chosen candle and you’ve got yourself a festive fall table with minimal effort!
Pumpkins and Floral Decoration
You can’t escape pumpkins in the fall. This is by far the easiest (and cheapest) way to decorate. Go to your local grocery and check out the many mini pumpkins and squash. Pick out 2-3 of them. Include a variety of colors and “warts.” Usually this will run approximately $5. Arrange them on your mantle or windowsill or dining table…a place where they can be noticed and appreciated without taking up needed space. And best of all—they should last through Thanksgiving! (Seriously, throw them out at the end of November though…)
